New Delhi/Lucknow: After nearly 25 years as a fugitive in a fodder scam case, Satyendra Kumar has finally been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency apprehended the proclaimed offender at Lucknow railway station after gathering intelligence, conducting technical surveillance and tracking his movements.
The arrest brought an end to a prolonged search for Kumar, who had allegedly evaded the legal process for decades. He was reportedly travelling by train when the CBI team intercepted him.
According to the CBI, Kumar absconded after a chargesheet was filed against him in the case in 2001. He repeatedly failed to appear before the court during the proceedings, following which a permanent arrest warrant was issued against him.
The agency continued efforts to trace his whereabouts over the years, using intelligence inputs and surveillance to track his movements.
Investigators established through intelligence gathering and physical and technical surveillance that Kumar had been hiding in Nepal. The agency subsequently received information indicating that he had returned to India.
On October 22, Kumar reportedly boarded a train from Guna in Madhya Pradesh for Lucknow. Acting on specific intelligence, the CBI formed a special team and positioned its officers at the railway station before the train arrived.
When Kumar reached Lucknow around midnight, the team identified and apprehended him, bringing the long-running search to an end.
Following his arrest, Kumar is being taken to Ranchi on transit remand. He will be produced before the competent court concerned, where the legal proceedings against him will continue.
The CBI said the operation was carried out through coordinated efforts involving intelligence gathering, technical surveillance and field-level tracking. His arrest marks a significant development in the agency’s efforts to bring a long-absconding accused before the court.
